Amethyst is a fascinating crystal that is loved by all healers and intuitives. It's original story is that a beautiful young virgin was being chased by the the Greek God Dionysus after he drank a wee bit too much red wine. She of course cried out to Goddess Diana, who then turned her into a frozen, yet shimmering white crystal.
Dionysus knew he blew it and wept tears of red wine over his non-human beauty. The virgin crystal turned purple upon the flood of tears. (Other versions say he simply spilled a goblet of red wine all over her and walked away. We like the more dramatic version.)
Amethyst comes from the ancient Greek word, Amethystos, meaning 'not intoxicated. The ancients tried to use amethyst to stay sober so they could continue partying into the night. ;-)
In all seriousness, Amethyst represents the sober and reflective nature of one who is in tune with head and heart, spirit and earth, as above, so below.
Amethyst means ‘not intoxicated’ and comes from the ancient Greek word – Amethystos. The Greeks, recognizing the grounding poignancy of the stone, thought they could use the crystal to protect them against intoxication and that wearing amethyst would keep them from falling down drunk.
